Experience & Portfolio

My editorial and publishing experience spans both fiction and non-fiction, from recent work with independent authors to many years of writing and technical editing for major US publishers.

Recent fiction projects

My recent fiction work includes proof-editing and proofreading a novel and short story by independent author Harry Williams, together with additional fiction for the author's website.

Lôn Cof – Harry Williams

Novel – proof-editing and final proofreading

Harry originally approached me to proofread Lôn Cof, a middle-grade/YA fantasy-horror novel. During the initial proofread, it became apparent that the manuscript would benefit from a greater level of intervention.

In addition to proofreading the text, I carried out copy-editing where appropriate and raised author queries where passages required clarification or further consideration. Harry incorporated the agreed changes and made additional revisions in response to my queries. I then carried out a further proofreading pass on the revised manuscript before publication.

Lôn Cof is independently published and available on Amazon.

“With a laser eye, John Philcox works above and beyond to ensure your work is its best. From day one to end of proofreading Lôn Cof, he has been professional, punctual and kind. I recommend anyone seeking John's services to contact him.”

– Harry Williams, author of Lôn Cof

The Box of Worlds – Harry Williams

Short story – proof-editing and final proofreading

Following my work on Lôn Cof, Harry asked me to work with him again on The Box of Worlds, a fantasy-horror short story for younger readers.

I proof-edited and proofread the manuscript, checking spelling, grammar, punctuation and consistency while also suggesting improvements to wording, sentence construction and readability where appropriate.

The Box of Worlds is independently published and available on Amazon.

The Eye – Harry Williams

Short fiction – proof-editing and final proofreading

Harry subsequently commissioned me to proof-edit and proofread The Eye, a further piece of fiction of approximately 3,000 words, which was subsequently produced as audio content for his website.
