Training
Professional development has been an important part of establishing and maintaining my proofreading and copy-editing skills. I have undertaken extensive training with recognised editorial organisations, including assessed courses in both proofreading and copy-editing.
Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP)
I have completed the following CIEP training:
- Proofreading 1: Introduction
- Proofreading 2: Headway – Pass
- Copy-editing 1: Introduction
- Copy-editing 2: Headway – Pass
The Headway courses included practical assignments that were submitted for assessment and graded by CIEP tutors.
Publishing Training Centre (PTC)
I have completed the following PTC courses:
- Essential Proofreading – Merit
- Essential Copy-editing – Pass
- Essential Grammar
- 15 PTC e-learning modules
The Essential Proofreading and Essential Copy-editing courses included practical assignments submitted for assessment and grading by PTC tutors.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
I believe that editorial skills should continue to develop throughout an editor's career. In addition to my CIEP and PTC training, I undertake further CPD to consolidate existing skills and develop knowledge in additional areas of editing and publishing.
Additional training completed through Udemy includes:
- Complete Punctuation Course
- Proofread Like a Pro
- How to Become a Freelance Editor
- Become a Copy-editor and Proofreader
Voluntary proofreading
I am also a volunteer with Distributed Proofreaders, which helps prepare public-domain texts for publication through Project Gutenberg. I have currently proofread more than 150 pages as part of the project.
